INTRODUCTION:

During the summer of 2003, on July 24th, the Salisbury Beach Lifeguards hosted a Lifeguard Competition at their beach in Salisbury, MA. These are the conditions, events, scoring, and random action photos, which can be enlarged if clicked, from that friendly competition.

THE CONDITIONS:

3 x ¾ MILE RUN RELAY: Three competitors from each team will run a distance of ¾ of a mile each. Each competitor will run down the beach, around a cone and then back to tag their teammate. 3 x 300 YARD SWIM RELAY: Three competitors from each team will swim a distance of 300 yards each. Each competitor will swim clockwise around a buoy placed 150 yards from shore, back in, and run out of the water to pass the rescue buoy to their teammate. CO-ED RUN-SWIM-RUN: Competitor #1 will run a distance of 400 yards, tag their teammate, Competitor #2 will then swim around a buoy placed 100 yards from shore, return to the beach and tag competitor #1 who will then run 200 yards to the finish. 3 x 400 YARD PADDLE BOARD RELAY: Three competitors from each team will paddle a distance of four hundred yards each. Each competitor will paddle clockwise around a buoy placed 200 yards from shore, back in, run out of the water and hand off the paddleboard to their teammate. SWIM RESCUE: Each team will place a victim in the water 100 yards from shore. The rescuer will swim a rescue buoy out to them and swim the victim in to shore. Once on shore, the victim may stand up and both rescuer and victim must run across the finish line while holding the rescue buoy. Victims may kick, but not pull to assist the rescuer during the swim back. IRON GUARD RELAY: Competitor #1 will run ½ a mile and tag competitor #2. #2 will swim 300 yards and tag competitor #3. #3 will then paddle 400 yards and cross the finish line with the paddleboard.
